Gerene V. Mayer, 93, of Fargo, ND, passed away Thursday, June 9th, 2022, at Eventide Fargo.
Gerene Vernell Aldous was born October 28, 1928, the daughter of George and Mabel (Morris) Aldous, in Cedar Rapids, IA. She moved with her family to Alexandria, MN, where she graduated from Alexandria High School in 1947.
On May 19, 1948, she was married to Wallace L. Mayer in Watertown, SD. They lived in Alexandria until 1963 when Wally started his career with Ottertail Power Company in Devils Lake, ND, and then to Jamestown, ND in 1964. While living in Jamestown, Gerene raised her children before going to work at Gold Bond Stamp and later Sears. She enjoyed baking, sewing, knitting, winters in Arizona, and was always caring for others. She volunteered many hours at Grace Episcopal Church and donated many baked and knit items to their bazaar every year. In 2008, they moved into One Oak Place in Fargo to be closer to family and enjoyed the many friendships they made there. Wally passed away June 24, 2014. Gerene later moved to Eventide Assisted Living in Fargo in 2017 and then to Skilled Nursing in 2020. The family would like to send a special thank you for the loving care she received from the Eventide staff and later Ethos Hospice care team. Years ago when asked how she’d like to be remembered Gerene said as a “good wife and loving mother” and that she certainly was!
She is survived by her children, Larry (Mary) Mayer of Portland, OR, Tam (Dennis) Wagner of Fargo, ND, Cindy (Warren) Bettenhausen of Lakeville, MN; grandchildren, Kelly (Chris) Crosby, Cory (Lucky) Wagner, Mike (Michelle) Wagner, Daniel (Danielle) Bettenhausen, and Amanda (Brandon Norling-Plash) Bettenhausen; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Addie and Emme Crosby, Cameron, Clark and Ellison Wagner, Vincent and Charlotte Wagner, Melanie Bettenhausen and Iris Norling-Plash; brother, David (Tori) Aldous; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wally; son, Greg; brother, George; and sisters, Arlys and Erlynne.
The Memorial Service for Gerene will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, July 28, 2022, in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 602 12th Ave E, Alexandria, MN 56308. Burial will follow in Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria.
