Gerry Leon Syverson, age 78, died Monday, May 7, 2018, in Vibra Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Gerry was born March 24, 1940, in Ulen, MN, to Norman and Maxine (Nickerson) Syverson. Gerry enlisted in the US Army on May 26, 1958, and was stationed in Germany where he served as a Personnel Clerk. While on leave, Gerry enjoyed traveling throughout Germany, France, Spain, Monaco, Italy, Austria, and England. Gerry especially enjoyed time spent in Madrid and Paris. These experiences had a profound impact on Gerry's perspective and world view. Gerry received an honorable discharge on April 30, 1964, with the rank of Sp4.

While in the Army, Gerry earned his GED. Upon returning to Moorhead, Gerry began taking college courses at Moorhead (MN) State University and then transferred his studies to North Dakota State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1972.

Gerry married Joan Maxson on April 27, 1968, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Gerry and Joan were married for 50 years, with Gerry stating that marrying Joan was the best decision that he ever made. Gerry and Joan made their home in Moorhead.

Upon completing his degree, Gerry began his career as civil engineer with Northern Improvement Company in 1972. Gerry worked for Northern Improvement Company for 30 years, retiring in 2002, with the title of Vice President and Chief Engineer.

Gerry was an avid Vikings and Twins fan who enjoyed gardening, remodeling projects, woodworking, cooking, working on logic puzzles, listening to a wide range of music, traveling to Las Vegas with Joan, trips to Sam's Club, and family gatherings.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Joan; one son, Kris Syverson, Moorhead; one daughter, Kari (Jon Morgan) Syverson, Minneapolis, MN; one very special grandchild, Fiona Morgan; his niece and goddaughter, Tami Manska, Fargo; niece, Cheri (Mike) Bauer; sister-in-law, Janice Maxson; brother-in-law, Jim (Janet) Maxson; brother-in-law, Ron (Nancy) Schmidt; and nephews, Jessie (Jamie) Maxson, Jake (Jerrica) Maxson, and Rick Schmidt.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ray and Loretta Maxson; his sister, Marcie Matson; his brother-in-law, Don Matson; two nephews, Rick Matson and Scott Matson; and sister in-law, Judy Maxson.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all the staff at Vibra Hospital for the care, compassion and support they gave Gerry the last three months of his life.

Visitation will be from 10 - 11 AM, with a Memorial Service at 11 AM, Monday, May 14, 2018, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
