Gladys Sannes, 89, went home to be with the Lord 7 January 2006. She was born in Tuttle, North Dakota. She was the fifth of eight children. Her parents, Hans and Kari Sathre were Norwegian immigrants. They homesteaded and raised cattle in the Tuttle area.
She graduated from Tuttle High School in 1935 and went on to attend Chicago Hairdressing Academy in Fargo where she graduated in 1938. She worked as a beautician in the Fargo area for the following three years. She moved to San Diego in 1941 to be closer to her future husband, Albert Sannes, who was in the Marine Corps. Following the onset of World War II she remained in the San Diego area while Albert served overseas. Upon Albert's return, they were married in Seattle, Washington where Albert had been hospitalized.
They returned to North Dakota following his discharge where Albert resumed his pre-war occupation in the field of public education. They lived in Robinson, Davenport and West Fargo before settling in Fargo. During this time she remained primarily at home while they raised a family of four children. Albert passed away in November 1968 following an extended illness with cancer. Gladys remained in their Fargo home until shortly before her passing.
Gladys was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and relished the opportunity to become involved in anything âNorwegian'⦠writing, reading and speaking; baking, cooking and eating. Lutefisk and lefse were considered âmusts' during the Christmas season.
Gladys had many fond memories from her youth. Many recollections included family music and singing four-part harmony around a piano or other musical instruments on the homestead. This tradition continued among the brothers and sisters for years to come. She enjoyed a special relationship with her nephew Kenneth Sathre and he would often sing along while she played the piano. She continued playing piano even during her final days at Elim.
She enjoyed many hobbies, including baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, bowling, upholstering and even had a few woodworking projects to her credit. She wasn't afraid to tackle any new project. Her competitive nature would often surface while participating in table games such as checkers and Rumicube. Her sense of humor was also evident while playing these games - occasionally she would even allow someone else to win.
She enjoyed traveling a great deal, often visiting family and friends. She had traveled throughout most of the United States including Hawaii.
Regardless of where she traveled, she never tired of coming home to the Great Plains. She had a deep fondness for her homeland of North Dakota and often argued with people that didn't agree that it was "God's Country."
She did volunteer work at Elim Nursing Home for many years sharing her beautician skills with the residents. She was also very active in community-oriented activities such as census taking and phone book distribution.
During her youth, Gladys attende
