Gladys Irene Sipe

June 23, 1914 — November 14, 2009

Gladys Irene Sipe, 95, Moorhead, MN, died peacefully Saturday, November 14. She was born in Stevens County, Washington on June 23, 1914 to William Benton and Mattie (Johnson) Jones. In her early years she attended Clayton, Washington school. The family home was completely destroyed by fire and later the family moved to Spokane.
Gladys met Stanley Sipe on a farm where they both worked - she as a nanny and Stanley as a hired man. They were married October 26, 1934 and maintained residence in Spokane. Stanley died January 1970 and Gladys continued to live in her home until moving to Moorhead in 1988 to be near her daughter.
Gladys volunteered at Eventide and in later years she and her dear friend, Joyce Benson, continued to visit residents. She attended Knollbrook Covenant Church where the congregation embraced her, nurtured her in her faith, and became her extended family. She cared about and supported programs to feed the hungry. She will be remembered for her love for her family and friends, her sense of humor and perseverance.
Gladys is survived by sister, Viola Burchett, Spokane, WA; sons, Gary (Pat), Cheney, WA; Steve (C.J.), Colbert, WA; Roger (Sue), Spokane, WA; daughter, Janice (Ivan) Johnson, Moorhead; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
The family wishes to thank Innovis Health for the excellent care they have given Gladys over the past few years, especially Heidi Olson-Fitzgerald, and the compassionate care to the family upon her death. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant World Relief, in care of Knollbrook Covenant Church, 3030 North Broadway, Fargo, ND 58102.
Memorial service: Saturday, November 21, 2009, at 11 AM at Knollbrook Covenant Church, Fargo.
