Gladys J. Askegaard

Gladys Janet Johnk was born November 27, 1921, in Sabin, MN, to Fred and Marie (Kuehl) Johnk. Gladys attended rural school in the Sabin area. While growing up, Gladys was active in 4-H and won awards in cooking and sewing.
Gladys was united in marriage to Arthur Askegaard on March 11, 1945, in Sabin. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Jamestown, ND, where they lived for six years. They returned to Moorhead in 1952. Arthur preceded Gladys in death on June 9, 1987, and she continued to make her home in Moorhead. Gladys passed away Sunday, August 2, 2009, in her home, surrounded by her family.
Gladys enjoyed sewing, cooking and keeping her family and friends warm with her beautiful handmade quilts. She also went on several bus tours, including visits to Alaska, Branson and Door County.
Gladys' family would like to extend a special thank-you to Hospice of the Red River Valley for their special care, compassion and support during this time.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, LorisAnn (Gerald) Fike, Moorhead; six grandchildren, JoMarie Fike, Moorhead, Patricia "Trish" Fike, Minneapolis, MN, Jill (Mark) Filipi, Moorhead, Pennie Fike, Chicago, IL, Olivia Lutz and William Lutz, both Minneapolis; three great-grandsons, Blake, Connor and Kaden Filipi; three brothers, Fritz Johnk, Lester (Beverly) Johnk and Delmer Johnk, all Sabin; two sisters, Ann Krabbenhoft and Elda Lewis, both Moorhead; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Kathy Melarvie.
In addition to her husband, Gladys was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia (an infant) and Marie; four sisters; and three brothers.
Visitation for Gladys will be Thursday, August 6, 2009, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Her funeral will be Friday, August 7, 2009, at 11 AM, in Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead.
Burial will follow in Hoff Lutheran Cemetery, rural Rustad, MN.
