Gladys Evelyn Schafer, the daughter of Joseph and Laura (Cleveland) Schafer, was born on the family farm at Gardner, ND, on May 21, 1916. She grew up and received her education at Gardner, where she graduated from high school in 1934.
On Dec. 2, 1935, Gladys was united in marriage to Milton Madson, at Moorhead, MN. Following their marriage they made their home in the Gardner area, where they farmed until retiring in 1979.

Gladys was active in her church and her community. She was a charter member of the "Friendly Neighbors" Homemakers group. In Nora Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school and held various offices. She started the Nora Men's Chorus and was director of the both the Men's Chorus and the church choir. She also sang for many funerals at Nora. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, knitting and crocheting.
In February of 2003, Gladys became a resident of Moorhead Healthcare Center, Moorhead. She died there on Thursday, October 23, 2003, at the age of 87. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Olson.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Milton, rural Gardner; two daughters, Evelyn (Glen) Nelson, Dayton, Ohio, and Ruth (Larry) McCrank, Illinois; two sons, Leroy, rural Gardner, and Roger (Kim) Madson, Fargo, ND; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchil
