Gordon St. Claire, 85, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, in the Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls, MN.
Gordon B. St. Claire was born August 27, 1922, in Callaway, MN, where he was raised by his great-grandmother. At 15 years of age, he moved to Fargo to live with his mother. In Feb. 1941, he enlisted in the US Army with the 164th Infantry and served in Guadalcanal and the Northern Solomons during WWII.
He was united in marriage to Lois Hellem on Jan. 6, 1945, in St. Augustine, FL. After Gordon's honorable discharge in August of 1945, they made their home in Fargo until moving to Minneapolis and Anoka, MN, area in 1952. Gordon worked as a sheet metal worker for various firms including Peterson Penny Plumbing and Heating, Anoka, until he retired. They then moved back to Detroit Lakes. On Nov. 4, 2000, after fifty-five years of marriage, Gordon's wife, Lois, died. He continued to live in Detroit Lakes until he became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home this spring.
Gordon received his GED when he was 60 years of age. He enjoyed hunting, playing cribbage, and spending time with family.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Mae Peterson and Floyd Sweet; three half-sisters, Marie, Mavis, and Debbie; and a half-brother, Jim. He is survived by two daughters, Reni Ehlen, Two Harbors, MN, and Rochelle St. Claire, Staunton, VA; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, Theodore LaDoux, The Dells, OR.
