Harold O. Osmundson, 76, Moorhead, MN, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Harold Omar Osmundson was born on July 17, 1946, in Moorhead, MN at St. Ansgar’s Hospital. He is the son of Mavis Irene (Sorenson) and Omar Julius Osmundson.
Harold grew up in Averill, MN where he attended elementary school. He attended high school in Glyndon, MN, graduating in the class of 1964. He was active in sports; playing football, basketball, and baseball. He continued to keep in touch with his classmates of 1964 though emails and annual reunions. Following high school, Harold took courses at Moorhead State College and the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1968.
After graduating college, Harold served 4 years as an officer in the United States Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Terrell County (LST 1157) during the Vietnam War. While serving in the Navy, Harold married Margaret Varriano. Though this relationship wasn’t permanent, they had three children together and remained friends. Following his military service, Harold worked at the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in St. Cloud, MN as a mechanical engineer. During his 24-year career with the VA, he served at numerous VA medical centers, including Sheridan, WY, Madison, WI, Saginaw MI, and finally Fargo, ND. He retired at age 55.
Harold enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, technology, tinkering, caring for his pets, and watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins play. His love of technology led to purchasing many computers over the years, attempting to program them all. He owned one of the first Apple computers, and it still works. Harold kept busy with woodworking during retirement. He made an old-fashioned roll-top desk and multiple wood crosses for Scandia Lutheran Church. Harold also kept the family laughing with his American Legion Magazine Humor page that he emailed monthly. Harold held many titles in his life, but his most important role was being a father. He was a single father who taught honesty and working hard for what you want. He was a good-hearted man with a sense of humor. He was very proud of his children and family. If you had a problem, Harold was always available to listen and could somehow magically make you feel better about any situation. He will be missed.
Harold is survived by his daughter Anita (Ian Gallagher); son, Harold (Janet); daughter, Maureen (Anthony) Teigen; and grandchildren, Adeline and Noelle Gallagher who call him “Minnesota Grandpa”. He is also survived by brothers, Daryl (Penni) and Mike (Peg); sister, Ruth; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends.
The Memorial Service for Harold will be Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 11 AM in Korsmo Funeral and Cremation Service with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior.
