Harold W. Koenning

Harold Koenning, 91, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at MeritCare Hospital Palliative Care, Fargo, ND.


Harold Wayne Koenning was born on August 1, 1918, in Peotone, IL, the only child of Cora and Martin Koenning. His family moved to Minnesota during his elementary school years, living in St. Cloud, MN, and in Moorhead, MN. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1936. Harold began working in the parts department of W.W. Wallwork during high school and continued there as parts manager for 35 years after his military service. He served in the Army from February 1942 until November 1945 as a First Lieutenant.


He married Ilo Davis on September 26, 1941, in Moorhead. He enjoyed 30 years of retirement and only spent the last 10 days of his life in the hospital.


Harold was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the VFW. He played amateur baseball with the Moorhead Red Sox and bowled on the Wallwork team for many years. He was an avid fan of the Moorhead High School Spuds and the Minnesota Twins. Harold attended Moorhead Athletic Association meetings for many years.


Harold is survived by his wife of 68 years; his three children, Doug (Dianne), Wilson, WI, Karen (R.C.) Grossheider, Cokato, MN, and Keith (Pat Murphy), Oberlin, OH. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Marty (Jenny) Koenning; Bayport, MN, Leah (Greg) Mardaus, Stillwater, MN, Matt (Heather) Koenning, Wilson, WI, Chrissie (Dale) May, Knapp, WI, Mike (Tammie) Koenning, Milwaukee. WI, Gail (Troy) Olson, Royalton, MN, Julie (Kyle) Schmidt, Pasco, WA, Scott Koenning, Oberlin, OH, and Anne Koenning, Oberlin, OH. In addition, he is survived by 14 great-grandchildren.
The Memorial Service will be Tuesday, June 1, at 2:00 PM at Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead.
Inurnment will be at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, June 14, 2010 at 11:30.
