Hazel Arvilla Sundby Wilson, age 95, Moorhead, MN, died Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Eventide on Eighth, Moorhead. She was born to Carl and Hannah (Moen) Sundby on August 21, 1920, at home in Sverdrup Township near Underwood, MN.
Hazel attended country school in Sverdrup Township and graduated from Underwood (MN) High School in 1937. She attended Business School in Minneapolis, MN, returning to Fergus Falls, MN, to work at the REA (now Lake Region Electric Co.) and then at Otter Tail Power Company. It was there she met her soon-to-be husband, Hjalmer Wilson. They were married November 9, 1942, in Fergus Falls, MN, while Hjalmer (also known as "Willie") was in the Navy.
They lived in several West Coast cities including Pasco, WA, and Oakland, CA. After the war, they moved to Fargo ND, where they operated a neighborhood grocery store. In 1957, they moved to Barnesville, MN, where they operated "Wilson's Super Valu" for eight years. The next move was to Moorhead. Hazel worked for seventeen years in the business office of Concordia College. After her retirement, she and Willie had more time to enjoy their cabin on Eagle Lake, near Battle Lake, MN. They also enjoyed camping in their small trailer, known as "the Wee House." Those were special years, but also difficult, as she cared for Willie, who had Parkinson's Disease.
After he died in 1988, Hazel eventually moved to a condo at One Riverside in Moorhead. In 1999, she moved to Linden Tree assisted living at Eventide in Moorhead, and for the past three years has lived in Heritage Court.
Hazel loved to read, enjoyed gardening, but mostly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were a joy to her as she was to them. She volunteered at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and at Eventide gift store.
She will be missed by her three children and their families, Sharon (Arnold) Ellefson of Barnesville, Linda (Mark) Johnson of Mount Vernon, WA, and Daniel (Norma) of Stillwater, MN; her grandchildren, Brenda (Eric) Aarness, Ted (Angie) Ellefson, Kari (Nate) Robideau, Jennifer (Andy) Higgins, Sarah (Winston) Dutchin, Rachel (Kevin) Klancher, Leah (Peter) Hamilton, and Jarl (Kirsten) Wilson; great-grandchildren, Tayler and Ashlyn Aarness, Elin, Karin, and Haley Ellefson, Jonathan and Nicholas Robideau, Ailey, Marin, and Silje Higgins, Luke and Samuel Dutchin, Julia, Lauren, and Brynne Klancher, Ella, Oren, and Lewis Hamilton, and Irene and Thomie Wilson.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; infant son, Richard Keith; her parents; three sisters, Myrtle Knutson, Helen Sem, and Elizabeth Sundby; and three brothers, Joseph, Gordon, and Clifford Sundby.
Hazel's family would like to thank the good people at Eventide, especially those at Linden Tree and Heritage Court, for the wonderful care.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 17, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her memorial service will be Friday, March 18, 2016, at 2 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel.
