Helen Hurlburt, 84, Moorhead, MN, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, in Moorhead.
Helen was born in Marinette, WI, to Anton and Dina (Anonsen) Delfs, on March 1, 1920. The family moved to St. Paul, MN, in 1921, where Helen grew up with her two sisters. She attended Mechanic Arts High School and graduated in 1939. During this time, she worked as a Red Cross Volunteer. She graduated from Frederick Mizen Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. Helen married Vernon F. Hurlburt on June 18, 1945, at the St. Paul Cathedral, and the couple settled in White Bear Lake, MN. In 1954, they moved to Moorhead, MN, where they raised seven children. To Helen, this was the most important and beloved job of all.
During her fifty years in Moorhead, she was a very active parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church. There, she was a member of the Lady's Circle, Catholic Daughters, and Christian Mothers. She also was a volunteer for Churches United For The Homeless. In her mid 40's, she was a manager for Mrs. Blow's Sewing Center in Moorhead, and retired from DeLendrecies in West Acres after many years of service.
Helen was a very talented seamstress and an avid gardener. She loved quilting, watercolor painting and antiquing. She also enjoyed crafts of all kinds, and every winter she attended classes to learn something new, such as woodworking, rosemaling, quilting, upholstery, rubber stamping, tile making, ceramics, and rug making.
She is survived by four sons, Vernon, Jr. (Sandy), Carthage, IL, John, Fergus Falls, MN, Mark (Karen), Yankton, SD, and Paul (Doreen), Fargo, ND; two daughters, Margaret (Ron) Hagemeister, West Fargo, ND, and Mary (Gene) Langevin, Borup, MN; fourteen grandchildren, Michelle (Matt) Merritt, Michael (Shelly) Salrin, Greg (Mary) Hurlburt, Dina (Seth) Schaller, Sarah (Marshall) Senf, Beth (Jeff) Haugen, Callie (Brian) Simek, Joe, Abby and Sam Hurlburt, Andrew and Jacob Martin, and Marc and Jaime Hurlburt; ten great-grandchildren, Jordon, Morgan, Madison, Jackson and McKenna Merritt, Adam Hurlburt, Isabel Schaller, Alexis and Alex Senf and Jackson Hurlburt; a sister, Marge Delfs, St. Paul; and a niece, Kim Kronstedt, St. Paul Park, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon Sr., who died November 18, 1988; two daughters, Elizabeth and Catherine; and a sister, Dorothy Kronstedt. Helen had many friends, family and loved ones, and will be dearly missed by all.
