Helen J. Thompson

Helen J. Thompson, 91, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, June 20, 2010, surrounded by family, in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.


Helen Jean Nelson, the daughter of Ernest and Esther (Rosenthal) Nelson, was born February 22, 1919. She grew up in Moorhead where she attended a country school and then graduated from Moorhead High School. She graduated from Concordia College in 1940.


Helen was married to Joseph Thompson. She lived for awhile in South Dakota where she taught school. Helen returned to Moorhead and taught home economics for 27 years at the high school in Glyndon, MN. She loved her students, and they were very special to her. Helen retired at the age of 62.


Helen was an advisor for the Home Ec Club. She was active in her church, including serving on the church board and the cemetery board. She was a member of Altrusa until her passing, serving as president from 1979 to 1981. She also volunteered at Churches United for the Homeless. Helen was an excellent cook and she enjoyed golfing, bowling, sewing, embroidery, painting and visiting with friends.


Helen is survived by a daughter, JoAnn Orvedahl, Moorhead; a son, James Thompson, Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Dale (Cindy) Orvedahl, Salt Lake City, UT; Jon Orvedahl, Moorhead; Jana (John) Nixon, Nashville, TN; Joy Orvedahl, Fergus Falls; and Toni Johnson, Moorhead; great-grandchildren, Helen and Sophia Orvedahl, Jayson, Joseph and Jacob Nixon.


Visitation: Thursday, 5 PM to 7 PM,
Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.


Funeral service: Friday, June 25, 2010, at 2:00 PM,
Bethesda Lutheran Church, Moorhead.
