Helen Nyquist Haugen

Helen Gertrude Sorenson was born November 25, 1927, in rural Becker County, MN. She was the daughter of Gilbert and Hannah (Cold) Sorenson. Helen was raised in Lake Park, MN, where she graduated from high school in 1945.

Throughout the years, she worked in various office positions. Helen moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area in 1950, where she met Kenny Nyquist. They were united in marriage on October 30, 1952, in Moorhead, MN. They enjoyed cards with friends and square dancing. On October 1, 1953, they had their first child, Diane. On April 14, 1967, they adopted their second child, Judy, who was six at the time.

Helen was very active with her church, Dilworth (MN) Lutheran. She loved to sew, crochet, quilt and spend time with her family. In February of 1990, she lost her husband to cancer. In June of 1995, Helen was united in marriage to Bennie Haugen. They enjoyed traveling and playing in a kitchen band called the Dingalings. In November of 2005, she lost him to complications from heart surgery.

Helen passed away peacefully, with her daughters at her side, on March 29, 2017, at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND, at eighty-nine years of age.

Helen is survived by her two daughters, Diane Wateland, Moorhead, and Judy (Mike) Caldwell, St. Anthony, MN; six grandchildren, Wes (Jenny) Wateland, Jason (Meghan) Wateland, Kristen (Chris) Lord, Andrew Caldwell, Amanda Caldwell and Jacob (Amy) Caldwell; nine great-grandchildren; and her special friend, with deep appreciation, Linda Davis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, and her son-in-law, Bernie Wateland. She will forever be missed.

Visitation for Helen will be Sunday, April 2, 2017, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth.

Her funeral will be Monday, April 3, 2017, at 2 PM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church.

Burial will be in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
