Helen V. Johnson, age ninety-six, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Bethany Retirement Living in Fargo, ND.
Helen Virginia Robertson was born March 26, 1914, in Glendive, MT, to James and Sarah Ann (Weaver) Robertson. She grew up in Fargo, graduated from Fargo Central High School, and earned her teaching certificate at Valley City (ND) State Teachers College. She started her teaching career in a country school and taught at several rural schools. She worked at Glyndon (MN) Elementary before her retirement.
Helen married Everett Johnson on June 20, 1942, in Moorhead, MN. She lived most of her married life on a farm near Glyndon, where she was a devoted mother and homemaker. Since her husband's death in 1997, she resided at Bethany, but lived at her Glyndon home with her daughter, Virginia, for the summer months.
Helen was an avid gardener and enjoyed quilting and embroidery. She cherished her family and her friendships, both lifelong and new. She created strong relationships with her caregivers at Bethany and treasured their friendship. Her compassion, work ethic, and sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by five children, Virginia Johnson, New York City, NY, John (Sandra) Johnson, Halstad, MN, Kathleen (LuVerne) Grussing, Juliaetta, ID, Robert (Kimberlee) Johnson, Lead, SD, and Rebecca (Robert) Casey, Finland, MN; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett; and her only brother, Raymond Robertson.
Helen and her family prefer memorials to the American Lung Association or a charity of your choice.
Funeral: Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at 2 PM, at the Mavis Whiting Chapel at Bethany Retirement Living, 201 S University Drive, Fargo.
Visitation: Monday, May 10, 2010, from 5 - 7 PM at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour prior to funeral services.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon.
