Helene Elaine Otterberg Barry, recently of the Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, MN, died August 11, 2007, at eighty-four years of age.
Born to Fred and Ida Otterberg on March 20, 1923, in Lemmon SD, Helene spent her childhood in Verona, Englevale, Elliott, and Lisbon, ND. She graduated from high school in Elliott. Helene later attended Valley City Teacher's College in Valley City, ND, and Interstate
Business College in Fargo, ND.
Music was a source of great joy for Helene. Her happiest memories were entertaining with her accordion. As a young woman, she played her accordion at dances. In the 1940's, she was a member of the Fairmont Old Timers, a music group that broadcast over WDAY radio. She was director of the Moorhead Senior Kitchen Band for many years; the kitchen band had been started by her parents in the 1970's. She also taught piano and accordion
for many years.
Helene worked as a negative retoucher for local photographers for many years. She won the Minnesota Retoucher of the Year award in 1975.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents and a brother, Russell. She leaves a son, Doug (Rosie) of Burnsville, MN, a daughter, Joan of Moorhead, and a granddaughter, Katie of Burnsville, MN.
Visitation for Helene will be Tuesday, August 14, 2007, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Her funeral will be Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 11 AM, in the Korsmo Chapel.
Burial will follow in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
