Hildegarde “Hilde” A. Howden, 98, of Fargo, ND, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024, in Bethany on University, Fargo.
Hildegarde Anna Horeni was born June 16, 1925, the daughter of James and Hildegarde (Dvorak) Horeni, in Chicago, IL. She was raised and attended school in Brookfield, IL and went on to pursue higher education at Wheaton College. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree from Wheaton College before furthering her education at the University of Minnesota where she received her master's degree.
On July 23, 1952, Hilde was united in marriage to Bruce E. Howden Jr., in Mankato, MN. They started their married life in Northfield, MN, before moving to Jersey City, NJ. While living in New Jersey Hilde worked as an editor of Mathematics publications. They later moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she worked for the Albuquerque Public Schools as a teacher and math coordinator. After their retirement, they settled in Sante Fe, NM. Bruce passed away on January 29, 1997. After the passing of her beloved husband, Bruce, Hilde continued to reside in Santa Fe until she made the decision to move to Fargo to be closer to family and made her home at Riverview Place.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she faithfully served as a Deacon.
In addition to her dedication to education and professional achievements, Hilde had a passion for reading and a genuine love for learning new things. She held a particular fondness for classical music and took great pleasure engaging in intellectual conversations with others while being a nonjudgmental listener.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruce; brother, Wesley Horeni; sister, Uldine Bagne; and niece, Alexis Paxton.
A Celebration of Hilde’s life will be 2:00 PM, Friday, February 2, 2024, in the Riverview Place Chapel, Fargo.
The burial will take place in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Sante Fe, NM.
