Howard Geng

Howard R. Geng, 100, of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014, in Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead.

Howard Reuben Geng was born April 20, 1914, the son of William and Catherine (Eichler) Geng, in Fort Collins, CO. He was raised in Windsor, CO, where he graduated from high school. After high school he worked as a caretaker for a Sandgreens golf course in Windsor and then for General Iron Company in Denver, CO, as a machinist.

Howard then moved to Indianapolis, IN, where he specialized in aircraft motors for a division of General Motors. He later moved to the West Coast where he met his future wife, Vera Mattes. They were united in marriage on December 3, 1942, in Walla Walla, WA.

In 1942, he entered the United States Army Air Corps serving during WWII. He was stationed overseas where he inspected the Air Force's bombers after they returned from missions. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945 and returned home to his beloved, Vera.

Howard then worked for Majestic Wax Company, where he learned the art of salesmanship. He later returned to General Motors in 1947, living in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota before settling in Fargo-Moorhead in 1956. He retired from Chevrolet in 1974. Vera passed away in 1983, and Howard has continued to make his home in Moorhead. He lived on his own until he entered Eventide on Eighth in July of 2014.

He was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Moorhead.

Howard and Vera enjoyed the lakes, especially Tiimberlane Lodge in Park Rapids and taking many leisurely trips up north to enjoy nature and the outdoors. Most importantly, Howard enjoyed the company of family and friends. Whether it was visiting over a cup of coffee, lunch, or at his favorite pub, those were the moments Howard enjoyed the most. Two of his fondest memories were attending the World Fair in Chicago, IL, and climbing to the top of Long's Peak in Colorado.

He is survived by his nieces, Barb (Tom) Myers, Broken Bow, NE, and Jean Redford, Omaha, NE; and several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; brothers, William and Russell; and infant sister, Constance.

A gathering of friends for Howard will be Thursday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

His memorial service will be Friday, September 5, 2014, at 2:00 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Ennichement will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead.
