Howard G. Payton, 92, of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, ND.
Howard George Payton was born October 5, 1920, the son of Benjamin and Agnes (Omberson) Payton in Slayton, MN, where he was raised and attended school. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 until 1947 and upon his discharge returned to Minnesota.
On March 8, 1947, Howard was united in marriage to Eleanor J. Lavold in Sioux Falls, SD. They farmed at Slayton and Osakis, MN, before settling in Moorhead in 1966. He then began working for Silverline Trucking Company as a truck driver and remained with them until he retired.
Over the years Howard and Eleanor enjoyed traveling to many destinations throughout the United States. Howard enjoyed playing solitaire and going to morning coffee. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the VFW.
Howard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eleanor; sons, Jim (Carol) Payton of Maple Grove, MN, and Mike (Barbara) Payton of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Cindy, Julie, Brian (Megan), and Shannon; and great-grandchild, Carter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon and Bob; and sister, Bernice Grime.
Visitation: Will be one hour prior to services in the church.
Memorial Service: Monday, April 15, 2013, at 1:00 PM, in Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead.
Inurnment: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead.
