Hugo Albert Schmidt was born in Hope, North Dakota on June 25, 1912 to Ernst and Ida (Gunkel) Schmidt. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hope in 1928. He grew up in a family of 10 children and received his education in rural schools near his home.
As a young man, Hugo served in the CCC and joined the United States Army in World War Two. He served in Puerto Rico and France as well as training at Camp Wallace and Camp Hood. He returned to his home after being honorably discharged from the Army.
One July 19, 1944, Hugo was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Bette) Klein in Hope. For all of their married years, they made their home in Fargo, North Dakota and became the parents of two daughters, Sue and Carol. For over 40 years, Hugo was an automotive technician at Brady Motors, which later became Overvold Motors in Fargo. He retired in 1975.
Besides raising their family, Hugo and Bette enjoyed many seasons at Big Pine Lake near Perham, MN. He greatly enjoyed hunting waterfowl with family and life-long friends. His passion for hunting and health remained strong for many years. With the help of friends, he was able to harvest geese in his 95th year.
Since moving to Fargo, Hugo has been a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo, where he served as a trustee and counter for 25 years. In the last couple of years, Hugo's health had declined. With the faithful help of Bette, he lived in his home until a few days before his death on Tuesday afternoon, March 30, 2010 at the age of 97 years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 3 sisters, Gustav, Louis, Everett, Ernest, Lawrence, Edgar, Adele Warren, Evelyn Johnson, and Helen Shasky.
