Irvin Leonard Williams, 88, of Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
He was born September 26, 1924, in Norwegian Grove, Pelican Rapids, MN. Irv graduated from Barnesville (MN) High School in 1943.
In 1944, Irv entered the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. After returning from service, Irv married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy (Possehl) Williams in 1948. The couple eventually settled in Moorhead in 1954.
Over the course of his career, Irv was employed by Hub Men's Clothing Store and the Fairmont Creamery, both of Moorhead, and later at Red Owl Stores, Inc. of Fargo. After 37 ½ years of service at Red Owl Stores, Irv retired in 1987.
Music was a significant part of Irv's life. It was said he would sing "at the sound of a pitch pipe." He was often a featured soloist in his high school choir. He was a charter member of the Great Plains Harmony Barbershop Chorus, formerly known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Irv sang throughout the United States, was privileged to be a member of many championship barbershop quartets, and received the honor of Barbershopper of the Year on multiple occasions. He also directed the Fargo-Moorhead Sweet Adelines.
Irv enjoyed golfing, bowling, woodworking, vegetable gardening and in later years, cooking, canning and baking. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Irv was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ella (Arness) Williams; and his eldest son, Steven Williams.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; sons, David Williams and Timothy (Robin) Williams; daughter-in-law, Annette Williams; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Irv is also survived by sisters, Charlotte (John) Nordgaard, Ruth (Ardon) Doran, and Grace (Ken) Swenson; and brother, Darrell (LaVonne) Williams.
Visitation: One hour prior to the funeral, at the church.
Funeral: Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at 2 PM in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fargo.
