Ishmael "Mel" Nitschke, 87, of Moorhead, MN, died January 23, 2011, at Elim Rehab and Care Center, in Fargo, ND.
Ishmael Nitschke was born May 1, 1923, in Ashley, ND, to Adolf and Johanna Nitschke. He grew up and attended school in Ashley. On April 25, 1948, he was united in marriage to Edith Marie Haugan, and they made their home in Fargo, ND, later moving to Dilworth, MN, and then to Moorhead. When Mel retired from the Moorhead Public Schools in 1987, they moved to Big Cormorant Lake, living there until Edith's death in 1997. Ishmael married Sherry Street on December 4, 2004, and they made their home in Moorhead. He enjoyed dancing, traveling, fishing, "putzing" at the lake and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Sherry, Ishmael is survived by his son, Jim (Audrey) Nitschke, Fargo, ND; daughters, Kathy (Steve) Bladow, Hankinson, ND, Cindy (Brad) Cicci, Clark, WY, Patty (Dan) Swanson, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Shelley (Rolland) Sayler, Fargo; step-sons, Jonathon (Lisa) Street, Crookston, MN, and Nathan (Rose) Street, Mankato, MN; a sister, Erma Veitch, Fargo; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces. He was loved by his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; parents; sister, Irene Sande; and brother, Marvin Nitschke.
Visitation: Sunday, 5 PM to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Funeral Service: Monday, January 31, 2011, at 11 AM, Grace Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.
Interment: Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
