Jack R. Powers, 78, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN.
Jack Rupert Powers was born September 27, 1930, to Orin and Verna (McDonell) Powers in Lake City, MN, where he was raised and graduated from high school.
After graduation, Jack attended Moorhead State University then enlisted in the Navy. While serving in the Navy, Jack married Mary Passe on May 3, 1952. Upon his discharge, they moved to Iowa City, IA, where Jack attended the University of Iowa graduating with his Master's. They then moved to California where Jack studied at Berkley.
In 1960, Jack and Mary moved to Moorhead where Jack accepted a teaching position at Concordia College in the Biology Department, specializing in Entomology. Jack taught at Concordia for thirty-eight years, retiring in 1998.
Jack was a life-long insect collector and had the honor of having three insects named after him. He enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling to Texas in the winters and around the United States, usually in the search and collection of insects.
Jack is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary, Moorhead; four children, Kevin Powers, Eagan, MN, Siobhan (Steve) Anderson, Perham, MN, Brian (Carla) Powers, Montevideo, MN, and Bob Powers, Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Afton (Nolan) Braseth, Ulen, an
Visitation: Wednesday from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Funeral Mass: Thursday, December 18, 2008, at 10 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead.
Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
