James B. Onsum, 82, Dilworth, MN, died peacefully Sunday, March 26, 2006, in his home.
Jim was born March 4, 1924, in Glyndon, MN, to Berthol and Henrietta (Jolly) Onsum. He was raised in Dilworth where he received his education.
As a young man, Jim worked as a brakeman for the Northern Pacific Railway. He entered the US Army March 3, 1943, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was discharged February 21, 1946. He returned to the area and married Edna Marie Orud, May 2, 1947, in Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Dilworth where Jim continued to work for Northern Pacific Railway as a brakeman. They moved to Glyndon, MN, in 1958, and Edna died June 25, 1982. Jim retired in 1985, and returned to Dilworth in 1997.
Jim enjoyed spending time outdoors, but in particular his garden. His experience and knowledge of gardening was helpful for many of his friends and family.
Jim is survived by four daughters, Sharon Hillyard, Enderlin, ND, Mary (Bob) Knapik, San Diego, CA, Nanci (Danny) Heuer, Glyndon, and Julie (Mike) Lammer, Fargo, ND; four sons, Larry (Bev), Moorhead, Darcy (Debbie), Perham, MN, David, Bullhead City, AZ, a
In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Bruce; a brother, Walter; and a sister, Kathryn Erstad.
Visitation for Jim will be Thursday, March 30, 2006, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His funeral will be Friday, March 31, 2006, at 2 PM, in Glyndon Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon.
