James "Jim" Martin

April 8, 1939 — June 5, 2008

James Albert Martin was born April 8, 1939, in Devils Lake, ND, to Herbert and Helen (Bannach) Martin, and graduated from high school in Egeland, ND.
Jim entered the US Army in September of 1957 and was stationed in Germany until his discharge in September of 1959. Jim worked for the North Dakota Highway Department and then moved to Fargo, ND, in 1961. Jim worked as a cook as well as a cab driver until he joined Welu Dental Lab in 1962, as a dental technician. Jim married Helen in 1976, and they made their home in Dilworth, MN, until he retired in 2001.
After he retired, Jim fulfilled his life-long dream of spending winters in southern Texas and summers at his lake home on Sybil Lake, near Vergas, MN. Jim enjoyed motorcycling, camping, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and sitting around the campfire watching the northern lights. He also enjoyed going to Vikings games with friends, watching football on television, and cruising around in the motor home. Family and friends were very important to Jim and he thoroughly enjoyed time with his grandkids. Always ready for a game of cards, Jim was known to play a good game of pinochle with whomever he could con into playing.
Jim died suddenly, but peacefully, at his home on Sybil Lake on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at sixty-nine years of age.
Jim is lovingly survived by his wife, Helen (Enger) Martin; daughter, Sandy (Tim) McDowell, and Diane Guthrie, both of Dilworth, and Sarah (Mario) Dilodovico, Rosemont, MN; sons, Dale Martin, and David (Nancy) Halvorson, both of Dilworth, and Marvin (Emily) Halvorson, of Sabin, MN; a sister, Joanne (Jon) Peterson, Fargo; and twelve grandchildren, Tanner, Justin and Trevor McDowell, Megan and Laura Halvorson, Jason, Matthew, and Daniel Guthrie, Luke and Elizabeth Halvorson, and Sheena and Anna Elder.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rosemary Lawrence; and three grandchildren, Dawn and Mark Martin, and Samuel Jim Halvorson.
Visitation for Jim will be Sunday, June 8, 2008, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His funeral will be Monday, June 9, 2008, at 11 AM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow in Little Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Barnesville, at 2:30 PM.
