Jim Grondahl, 83, of Dilworth, MN, died Friday, June 23, 2017, in Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND, where he had been a resident since February of 2017.
James Orland Grondahl, son of Otto and Jessie (Blilie) Grondahl, was born in Moorhead, MN, on January 25, 1934. He grew up in Moorhead and graduated from high school in 1951. In the fall of 1956, he entered the US Army and served his country for two years.
On Dec. 29, 1956, Jim married JoAnn Huseby. After Jim finished his military service, the lived in Bismarck, ND, where Jim worked for Western Electric. They returned to Moorhead and Jim worked for 23 years as the Director of Emergency Services for Clay County. He retired in 1991. His wife, JoAnn died July 23, 1970.
On May 27, 1971, Jim married Donna Rogers. They lived in Moorhead and from 1975 to 1991 in Sabin, MN, where they founded the Sabin Rescue Squad in 1980. In retirement, they spent summers at their lake home near Lake Park, MN, and wintered in Weslaco, Texas. They spent five years full-time in Texas and in August of 2015, they moved to Fargo from Texas, and later moved to Dilworth.
Jim was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead, and a member of the Sabin Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, camping and snowmobiling. In Texas, Jim played shuffleboard and did woodworking, including making beautiful wood pens and lighted angels.
Jim is survived by his wife, Donna, Dilworth; children, Randy (Connie) Grondahl, Fargo, Cynthia Jensen, Hendrum, MN, and Chris (Sue) Arp, Rocklin, CA; a brother-in-law, Jack Hoerr; eight grandchildren, Kari (Larry) Chenault, Krysta Jensen, Nichole (Tim) Klemz, Chad Oien, Christine (Mike) Sauvageau, Alycia Stam, Josh and Jordan Arp; and five great-grandchildren, Brayden and Kyah Chenault, Chloe and Keaton Klemz, and Clara Sauvageau. In addition to his first wife, JoAnn, and his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two sisters, Mona Jean Grondahl and Darlene Hoerr.
The funeral service for Jim will be Friday, July 7, 2017, at 11 AM in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Visitation will be at church, the hour before the funeral. Burial will be at Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
