This history and personal thoughts were written by his brother, John Gustafson.
James William Gustafson was born to Dr. Maynard and Dorothy Gustafson in Rochester, MN on October 18, 1951. He moved to Fargo, ND with the family in 1952.
Jim was a multitalented individual. In the 6th grade he designed and built a computer for his science fair project, just a small indication of things to come. I could never figure out how it worked but Jim said it was easy. He also excelled in music playing with accomplished Rock ân Roll bands as a teenager and young adult with the names of Beethoven's 5th and Overland Stage.
Jim graduated from Fargo South High School in 1970. I don't believe he ever read a school textbook or studied but he always aced the tests. He received his Bachelors of Science degree with honors from North Dakota State University in 1977 with a business major and minors in economics and mathematics. In 1979 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Masters of Library Science degree with emphasis in advanced reference, library automation, online reference, academic libraries and government documents. He later completed all but his dissertation for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science at North Dakota State University.
I remember once asking Jim how his doctoral database sort algorhythm was going. He stated that he couldn't answer that question because it requires a comparative and since what he was doing had never been done before there was nothing to compare it to, so he couldn't answer the question. Then he said, "I can show you what I'm doing however."
Jim taught Computer Science at Concordia College from 1991 to 1995. He thoroughly enjoyed seeing students come alive as they mastered information and computer skills.
Even though Jim struggled with depression for much of his life he was always willing to care for others. He assisted his mother in the care of his father Maynard until his death in October 1992. Then he cared for his mother until her death in October 2000
Jim is survived by his brother, John (Linda) Gustafson of Fargo, ND and sister, Carol Kosel (Gary) of North Oaks, MN. His two nieces, Linnea Korbl (Tye) of Fargo, ND and Amy Kosel of North Oaks, MN; his two nephews, Will Kosel (Shawna) of Coon Rapids, MN
A graveside service is planned for Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 3 PM, in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
