Jan K. Flanery, 73, of Valley City, ND, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Eventide Linden Tree Circle, Moorhead.
Jan Kathryn Bauer was born December 29, 1951, the third of nine children to Walter and Helen (Gant) Bauer, in Huron, SD. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Valley City, ND, and graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in 1969. After high school, she studied at Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA, and then Valley City State College during which time she spent a year overseas living with a German family. Jan went on to finish her education at the University of South Dakota receiving a degree in English with minors in German and History on May 10, 1975.
Jan married Mark Francis Flanery on August 9, 1975, and to this union her two daughters, Jacqueline and Kathryn were born. Throughout the years, Jan lived in several states raising her family and working before retiring in 2017. In the last few years, she has made her home in East Gull Lake, MN. Jan took great pride in creating a warm and inviting home for those around her.
People knew Jan for her unwavering work ethic, strong will, meticulous attention to detail, and her spirituality and generosity. She had a great laugh and loved a good joke. She was generally a serious person but never failed to show her silly side to her grandkids.
In her leisure time, Jan found joy in reading, writing, beading, watching movies and various hobbies throughout the years. She also enjoyed meeting friends for coffee and was always happy to chat on the phone. She took moments over the years to write letters of support to the many children she sponsored. She also wrote and sent cards to her loved ones every chance she had to show she cared. Jan paved her own path throughout her life and valued her independence.
Jan will be dearly missed by her daughters, Jacqueline (Steven) Kurle and Kathryn (Gonzalo Badillo) Flanery; grandchildren, Dayton, Hubbell and Jackie Kurle, and Luzia, Gabriel and Rafael Badillo Flanery; siblings, Jo Astrup, Jean Donahue, John Bauer, Judy Bauer, Jerome Bauer, Jennifer Stowell and Jane Longtin, and their respective partners and families.
