Janet Catherine Gorman, 71, of Moorhead MN, died on Friday, February 27, 2009 in Golden Living Center, Moorhead. Janet was born on January 15, 1938 at St. John's Hospital in Fargo, N.D., the third daughter of John William and Alberta Mildred Gorman.
Janet graduated from Moorhead High School in 1956. She continued her education at the University of Minnesota and upon graduation, was employed by the National Security Agency in Columbia, Maryland. As the nation's cryptological organization, the National Security Agency is home to America's codemakers and codebreakers. The Agency's core mission is to protect U.S. national security systems and to produce foreign signals intelligence information. Although never able to discuss her top secret work, Janet was proud to play a part in such a unique, highly confidential organization. At the agency, Janet worked as a linguist, an intelligence research analyst, a reporter and a senior editor.
As a community member in the Columbia, MD, area, Janet was very active in the Central Maryland Meals on Wheels, serving as head of the Columbia branch and as a representative to the council in Baltimore. Janet was an avid genealogist and a member of the Howard County Genealogical Society. Janet was also a member of the local bridge group for 15 years.
Following retirement from the National Security Agency, Janet returned to Moorhead, MN, to be closer to her roots. In Moorhead, she was active as a volunteer with the Clay County Historical Society enjoying her many hours and friendships at the Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center. Janet also volunteered briefly with the Clay County Meals on Wheels.
Janet was an avid gardener and crafter. She produced beautiful needlework pieces and was well known for her handcrafted ‘angels', which she donated to many organizations. Janet loved cooking, the symphony and reading. She treasured her many nieces and
Janet was an intelligent and fascinating conversationalist, possessed a great sense of humor and loved nothing more than a good laugh with friends or family. As is often the case when one lives far from home, Janet's many friends became her ‘family' in M
Janet is survived by 8 nieces and 1 nephew: Joan Geiger of Bismarck, Linda (Victor) Krabbenhoft of Moorhead, Julie (Scott) Wenzel of Brooklyn Park, Carol Lebakken of Dilworth, Peggy Stuart of Putney VT, Laurie Croal of Weymouth MA, Susan Nelson of Weymout
Janet is preceded in death by her parents, sister Virginia Lebakken, sister Mary Croal and nephew James Croal.
Visitation: One hour prior to services, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.


Funeral Service: Friday, March 6, 2009, at 2 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.


Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
