Jean Torgerson

January 4, 1936 — December 24, 2020

Jean Carol Bergan was born on January 4, 1936, to Otto and Edith (Anderson) Bergan. Jean and her three sisters, Mary, Nancy and Kay, were raised on the family farm in Skree Township, located between Hawley, MN, and Barnesville, MN. Jean was baptized and confirmed at Gran Lutheran Church and always felt a deep connection to Gran.

She attended country school and when bus service arrived, she attended school in Barnesville and later Hawley, where she graduated from high school. She went on to receive her teaching degree from North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND. After college, Jean taught Home Economics in Brainerd, MN, and Larimore, ND.

Jean married Gary D. Torgerson at Gran, on June 7, 1958. Gary and Jean were blessed with three children, Karen, David and Laura. In 1964, they moved to Moorhead, MN, where they continued to reside. The family spent summers at the Bergan family farm in Skree Township.

While raising her family, Jean taught summer Bible school, Sunday school and 4-H. She taught her children many life skills, including, cooking, sewing, gardening and the love of nature and for all living things. Every summer, along with Edith, Jean and Gary, she lovingly shared the beauty and bounty of the farm with friends and family who were always welcomed with kindness.

On Thursday, December 24, 2020, Jean was transferred to the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, where she passed away.

Jean is survived by her husband, Gary; two daughters, Karen (Mike) Lewis, Barnesville, and Laura (Neil) Tangen, South Heart, ND; a son, David (Mary) Torgerson, Fertile, MN; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Vann and Kay DeRoos. Preceding her in death were her parents, Otto and Edith Bergan and her sister, Nancy Melby.
