Jeanette Mary (Knedel) Heuer, 93, passed away peacefully at her Moorhead, MN, home Tuesday, July 19, 2022 after a difficult struggle with dementia. She was born in Long Prairie, MN, to Clara (Grundt) and Otto Knedel, the second oldest of four children, raised in Hewitt and graduated from Bertha High School in 1947. She earned an LPN from Miller Hospital School of Nursing and worked at NP Hospital in St Paul, MN, Wadena (MN) Hospital, and as a traveling nurse in Florida. She married her high school sweetheart Gerald “Jerry” Heuer in 1954 and worked two jobs as a nurse to support him as he finished graduate school at the University of Minnesota. She and Jerry shared a lifelong commitment to Concordia College, and spent academic years in Lincoln, NE; Berkeley, CA; Pullman, WA; Türnich, Germany; and Graz, Austria. Jeanette was a very active faculty wife, entertaining faculty and students, and promoting Concordia always.
Jeanette was the consummate handicrafter. She learned Hardanger embroidery and taught it to many. She crocheted thousands of snowflakes to sell and knit countless prayer shawls that she gave to family, friends, and those suffering from cancer.
She and Jerry raised four children in Moorhead, spending part of each summer camping in a canvas tent and cooking meals over an open campfire at Glacier National Park or Woodbine Campground in the Beartooth Mountains. They built a cabin in Montana which they enjoyed each summer. She is known for baking wonderful 7-grain bread in the wood stove in the cabin, fishing for trout, and playing cards enthusiastically. Jeanette loved music, especially when her children and grandchildren played piano. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Absarokee, MT.
Above all, Jeanette was very proud of her children and grandchildren. Garrison Keillor was talking about her when he acknowledged that Minnesota offspring are all above average. She is survived by her four children, Paul (Julie), Karl, Ruth (Will Allen), and Otto; and four grandchildren, Jeremy, Dylan, Will, and Clara. She is also survived by a sister, Juanita McIntire; and sister-in-law, LaVonne Knedel; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Gerald Heuer; her sister, Patricia Ahrendt; and brother, Paul Knedel. Special thanks to Karl who moved from California to Minnesota to enable Jeanette to live her final days at home, as was her wish; Paul and family for helping Jerry and Jeanette, especially during the pandemic; and niece, Cheryl Ahrendt, for special care and family support.
Private services have been held.
The family welcomes donations to The Dr. Gerald A. and Jeanette M. Heuer Endowed Mathematics Award.
