Jerome G. Shawstad

Jerome Glencoe Shawstad, age 66, died comfortably under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, on Saturday afternoon, October 3, 2009 at the Evergreens Assisted Living in Fargo, ND.
Jerome "Jerry" Shawstad, the son of Walter Shawstad and Anna (Martindale) Shawstad, was born September 5, 1943 in Halstad, MN. He graduated from high school in Barnesville, MN, and soon thereafter joined the armed forces. Jerome served in the US Army during the Korean War and was also stationed in other locations around the world.
On July 27, 1968, Jerome was united in marriage to Greta Ruth Magnuson, in Canby, MN. Following their marriage, they made their home in Moorhead, MN. He went on to become a career firefighter for the Moorhead Fire Department and also worked as an auto mechanic at Sears Auto Center, in Fargo. Greta preceded Jerome in death on February 18, 2007.
Jerome is survived by two sons, David, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Michael, Moorhead; two brothers, John Shawstad, Torrance, CA, and Keith Shawstad, Gackle, ND; three sisters, Diane Torrentera, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Madeline Shawstad, San Pedro, CA, and Marilyn Heller, Fargo; and two grandchildren, Casey and Lucas Shawstad, Frazee, MN.
Visitation for Jerome will be Tuesday, October 6, 2009, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
The funeral will be Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at 10:30 AM, in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Burial, with full military honors, will be Wednesday at 2 PM, in the Hawley Cemetery, Hawley, MN.
A memorial fund is being set up in Jerome's memory. The family asks that donations, in lieu of flowers or other gifts, be made to the family. They may be sent in care of Korsmo Funeral Service, 409 - 8th St. S., Moorhead, MN, 56560.
