Joan K. Ostlie, age 75, of Moorhead, MN, died Monday, February 24, 2014, in Serenity Hospice and Palliative Care, Sun City West, AZ, after fighting a 28-year battle with cancer.
Joan was born in Carrington, ND, to Earl and Vae (Nelson) Kruschwitz on July 15, 1938. Joan grew up in Valley City and attended Valley City State University, first at the campus school from first grade through high school, and then the University, earning a degree in English and business.
In 1960, Joan married John Ostlie. She taught over 30 years at Hawley, Dilworth and Moorhead High Schools, with the majority being at what is now M State. She was involved over 30 years with the American Cancer Society, Minnesota Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society for educators, and was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church. She loved to travel and did so extensively, especially cruising. Joan enjoyed spending time between Minnesota and Arizona, allowing her to see and spend time with her grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her husband, John; three children, Rene (Marty) Fisher, Phil (Brenda) Ostlie and Heidi (Mac) Bain; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Tina, McCall (Tucker), Trevor, Olivia, Isabella and Josie; her mother, Vae Kruschwitz; sisters, Mary Schroeder and Deborah Kruschwitz-List; and aunt, Donna Nix. She was preceded in death by a sister, Beth Pawluk and her father, Earl Kruschwitz.
Memorials preferred to American Cancer Society or Roger Maris Cancer Center.
Visitation will be Friday, 5-7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
The memorial service is Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 11 AM, in Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead.
