John E. Rodenkirck Jr., 88, West Fargo, ND, died Monday, January 9, 2012, in Sanford Health Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.
John Earl Rodenkirck Jr. was born April 1, 1923, in Moorhead, MN, to John Sr. and Seline (Nelson) Rodenkirck. He attended school in Fargo. In World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Upon his discharge, John returned to Fargo where he worked as a firefighter in the Fargo Fire Department.
After working for the Fire Department, he owned and operated several service station businesses including a Pure Oil station in Fargo and Mobil stations in Fargo and Encinitas, California.
On November 10, 1962, John married V. Jean Marston at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Fargo. They moved to Encinitas where they eventually retired. In 2009, they returned to Fargo.
John was an avid golfer. As a World War II veteran, he was a member of the American Legion. In his youth, he also raced cars.
John is survived by his wife, V. Jean Rodenkirck, West Fargo; a sister, Helen Shirley, Fargo; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ellsworth Shirley.
Memorials may be given to Sanford Health Palliative Care or Sheyenne Crossing.
Visitation: Thursday from 12 - 1 PM at First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Funeral: Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 1 PM, First Lutheran Church.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
