John M. Jess Jr.

John Marks Jess was born February 15, 1929, in Fargo, ND, to John and Meta (Oelfke) Jess. John was raised in Fargo where he graduated from high school in 1947.

John attended NDSU, Fargo, for one year before entering the US Navy in 1948. He served as an aerial photographer while in the Navy until his discharge in 1952. He returned to Fargo at that time and resumed his studies at NDSU.

John was united in marriage to Bette Marie Swanson on December 20, 1952, at Fargo. He graduated from NDSU in 1957, and he began his teaching career in Cooperstown, ND, in 1957. They lived in Cooperstown for two years, and then moved to Goodridge, MN, where he taught the next two years.

They returned to live in Fargo for a brief time until John began teaching English in the Moorhead (MN) Public School system. They moved to Moorhead at that time. John retired from full-time teaching in 1987, but continued to substitute regularly until 2008.

John died at his home in Moorhead on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at eighty-two years of age.

John is survived by his wife, Bette M. Jess, Moorhead; daughter, Jana M. Jess, Fargo; and a grandson, SSG Paul John Jess Murray, and his wife, Heather, Lacey, WA.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Jess III; and three sisters, Dorothy Schroeder, Elsabe Lindberg, and Betty Jess.

Visitation for John will be Tuesday, June 14, 2011, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His funeral will be Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 2 PM, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Burial, with full military honors, will be Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 10:30 AM, in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
