John F. Marquart, 82, Pelican Rapids, MN, peacefully passed away Monday, February 26, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
John was born in Fargo, ND on November 4, 1941, to Eugene “Gene” and Leone (Hoefling) Marquart. He attended school in Mapleton, ND and graduated from Glyndon High School in 1959. He was united in marriage to Gretchen Motschenbacher on February 8, 1964, and recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
John had a remarkable 47-year career with American Linen Supply Co., later renamed to AmeriPride. His hard work and commitment were evident as he progressed from a route driver to various managerial positions, including plant manager at the Bemidji and Fargo plants. His love for his job and colleagues was so profound that he continued working well beyond the typical retirement age, retiring at the age of 68.
Outside of work, John was known for his boundless energy, infectious joy, laughter, and unwavering positivity. Growing up on a farm instilled in him a love for tinkering with mechanical objects. He had a passion for anything with an engine and at one point owned motorized goods totaling over 120 cylinders. Although not an avid cook, John enjoyed grilling and was famous among family gatherings for his delightful French Onion soup. John and Gretchen enjoyed many fun evenings with friends and family at the Cormorant Pub.
John loved being out on the water. His collection of antique wood boats and cabin cruisers showed his love for boating in lakes country. He named his cabin cruisers after his favorite bourbon– Old Crow.
In addition to his professional and personal interests, John's generosity knew no bounds. He cherished spending time with loved ones, especially his grandchildren. Known for his selfless nature, John was always willing to lend a helping hand both in terms of time and financial support.
Some of John's proudest accomplishments included excelling as a salesman, leaving no challenge unconquered - even successfully selling a motorcycle that refused to start!
He played a pivotal role in establishing the Marquart family legacy at Fish Lake, ensuring that future generations would have the opportunity to create lasting memories by the lake. During times of adversity within his family, John supported his younger brothers when their father's health declined, becoming a guiding light and important role model.
John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Gretchen of Pelican Rapids, MN; two sons, Steven Marquart of Moorhead, Don (Jen) Marquart of Wayzata, MN; daughter, Karen (Jim) White of Bemidji, MN; eight grandchildren, Sam Marquart, Jake Marquart, Luke Marquart, Bella Marquart, Amelia Marquart, Alec White, Justin White and Lauren White; four brothers, Douglas Marquart of Moorhead, MN, Eugene (“Kris”) Marquart of Pelican Rapids, MN, Greg (Sharon) Marquart of Fargo, ND, and Paul (Colleen) Marquart of Dilworth, MN; one sister, Linda Butler of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Shirley Motschenbacher of Hackensack, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
