John Thomas McDonough was born June 30, 1934,in Minneapolis, MN. The family moved to Moorhead, MN, and John graduated from Shanley High School, Fargo, ND.
After high school, John enrolled in film school in Hollywood, CA. He attended for a year before he was drafted into the US Army. While serving he met his wife to be, Theodora Hellwig. They were married on June 6, 1959, in Niagara Falls, NY, and they came to Fargo on their honeymoon, eventually taking up residence in south Moorhead.
John worked as a film editor for Snyder Films and as a director and writer for Flint Communications until his retirement. John enjoyed collecting old records and movies. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he sang in the choir. He was also a member of the FM Civic Opera Company.
On May 16, 2004, Theodora died and John continued to make his home in Moorhead until his death on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Essentia Health, Fargo. He was seventy-seven years old.
John is survived by his three children Wendy (Richard) Hutchings, Reno, NV, John McDonough Jr, Moorhead, and Christopher McDonough, Reno; one niece; 2 nephews; and many friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margaret Mayer.
John has donated his body to the University of North Dakota Medical School, Grand Forks, ND.
Memorial Mass: Monday, December 19, 2011, at 2 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead with Visitation from 1 -2 PM at the church.
