John W. McManus

John W. McManus, 81, Dilworth, MN, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

John Walter McManus was born February 9, 1928, to Philip and Margaret (Dullea) McManus in Fargo, ND. He was raised in Dilworth and graduated from Dilworth High School. In 1946, John enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1948. Upon his discharge, he returned to Dilworth and began working for the Northern Pacific Railroad, now the BNSF.

On February 9, 1957, John married Jacquelin Hartl in Alice, ND, and they made their home in Dilworth. In 1992, they moved to Big Cormorant Lake and John continued to work for the railroad until his retirement in 1993.

John's passion was the lake as he enjoyed gardening, swimming, and continuously working by taking care of their home there. He was also an active member of the Cormorant Lions. His greatest joy though was his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Jacquelin, Dilworth; four children, Minette (Kim) Carpenter, Hawley, MN, Mark McManus, Minneapolis, MN, Michael (Beth) McManus, Dilworth, and Mary (Matt) Laddusaw, Hawley; a daughter-in-law, Mary McManus, Fargo, ND; three siblings, Catherine (Russ) Fitzgerald, Dilworth, Robert (Elayne) McManus, Des Moines, WA; and Eugene (Toni) McManus, Detroit Lakes, MN; and eight grandchildren, Nicholas Carpenter, Matthew, Megan, Macey, Samantha, and Tanner McManus and Jessica and Brittany Laddusaw.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Murray; a brother, William; and a sister, Mary.


Visitation: Thursday from 6 - 8 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.


Memorial Mass: Friday, October 2, 2009 at 3 PM in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Dilworth.


Inurnment: Hawley City Cemetery, Hawley
