Jolene Kay Stabnow "went home" to her maker peacefully Thursday, September 6, 2007 at the age of 74, with Hospice, Clergy and family present in Dilworth. She entered this world on May 1, 1933 to Ralph and Inez (Hersgard) Peterson in Rutland, ND where Jolene grew up and attended school. During the depression, her father, a WWI veteran died from a heart attack, later the family was devastated by a fire that consumed their family billiard and boarding business in Rutland. During high school, Jolene took a job at the Rutland Movie Theatre as a ticket salesperson and cleaned houses. She often took her little sister with her because she had to care for her while her mother was working.
Jolene lived a life of service. It was easier for her to give then receive. Her devotion to God began early in her life. As a very young girl she attended the Rutland Baptist Church where her Uncle Ludwig Hersgard was a pastor. She sang solos and went to Sunday school faithfully.
In 1949, Jolene married Roger Stabnow in a private ceremony in Webster, SD. They were blessed with 5 children from that union and Jolene often said how proud she was of her children and that they had all gone to college.
Their journey together began humbly in Oakes, ND. They moved to Newark, SD and Jolene worked as a bookkeeper at the Newark elevator where Roger worked. Later they moved to Luden, ND and worked at the elevator there until Roger took a job in the Black Hills Gold Mine at Lead, SD where they lived for 10 years. While in Lead, Jolene devoted her life to her family and was a foster mother. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith while she lived in Lead and attended church regularly. In late summer of 1964 they moved to Nashua, MN where Roger managed the Nashua elevator and Jolene worked in the Lutheran Children's Home in Fergus Falls until she was in a near fatal accident and was unable to work due to a long recovery. They were members of the Foxhome Vukku Lutheran Church and again she witnessed her faith in God. In 1974 they moved to Sheldon, ND where Roger helped manage the Sheldon elevator. Jolene worked in the Sheldon Café and was a Home Health Aid. They were members of the Enderlin Lutheran Church in Enderlin, ND where she remained a member until her death. In the early 1990's Jolene moved to Fargo, ND and for several years has lived in Houge Estates in Dilworth, MN. While in Dilworth she attended Lutheran church services at Houge Estates when she could, otherwise she welcomed pastoral home visits with communion from Hope Lutheran north where her daughter Deborah is a member.
Jolene loved to sew, cook and bake, bowl, read, walk, play puzzles cards or games, listen to music, garden, and be around family, children and animals. Her favorite time of the year was autumn when the leaves began to change. Her favorite song was "What a friend we have in Jesus". Her favorite pet was her poodle "Buddy". She loved listening to Elvis Presley music and pianist Roger Williams and always enjoyed hearing music her son Michael arranged. She surrounded herself with devotional materials and enjoyed watching "Hour of Power" on Sundays as it became difficult to attend church.
During her lifetime, she taught bible school, played on a bowling league, sang in church choir and helped with the church ladies auxiliaries. She believed in education and was an active member/volunteer in PTA. While living in Sheldon, ND she served on
