Joseph O. Bakken, the son of Christ and Sophia (Hollevoet) Bakken, was born in rural Ulen, MN, on October 1, 1926. Joseph grew up and received his education in the Ulen area.
During the Korean Conflict, Joseph served his country in the US Army, stationed in Korea. After his discharge from the Army, Joseph returned to Ulen. In 1954, he moved with his mother to West Fargo, ND, and later to Moorhead, MN.
On Dec. 26, 1960, Joseph married Anna Mandrusiak, in West Fargo. They made their home in rural Moorhead. Joseph worked as a machinist, a bus driver, a bricklayer, and a self-employed gravel truck driver before he became a custodian at the US Federal building in Fargo, ND. Anna died on March 14, 1968.
On June 29, 1980, Joseph married Irene Penner Thompson, in Fargo, ND. They lived in rural Moorhead. Joe retired in 1988 and in 1989 they moved into Moorhead, where they had lived since.
Joseph Bakken died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Moorhead Healthcare Center, at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Joel Daniel; a sister, Hazel Anderson; and his first wife, Anna.
