Josephine was born to Leo and Ella Jenny in Manfred, North Dakota in 1916. She was 96 years old; three days shy of her 97th birthday on January 5th. She passed in peace and comfort at Sanford Hospital on January 2, 2013, with Monsignor Mike Foltz at her side.
Josephine and her family moved to Moorhead, Minnesota when she was 14. She was later joined by two sisters and a brother: Elizabeth Ann, Mary Joanne and Allen John. Allen died in a car accident in 1941. Joanne (LaChance) passed away in 1974. And 1980 marked the passing of "Betty" (Charleson). The sisters provided Josephine with many nieces and nephews.
Josephine married George Hovland in 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Fargo. They had one child, Allan, in 1949. George was a carpenter, spending most of his career at the V.A. Hospital in Fargo.
Josephine spent many years teaching elementary school at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Moorhead. She later worked for Mike and Gordy Swang at the "Shoe Box" in downtown Moorhead. She finished her working years at St. Ansgar's Hospital in the accounting department. She continued working part time after George's death in 1983, at the age of 72.
"Josie" was always known for her wonderful sense of humor, her faith in God and, later, her deep seated love for her grandchildren; Alaina, Denver, CO. and Nicolas, Mahtomedi, MN. She also had a great grandchild, Zoe, age two, who Josie described as her little buddy and smallest love of her life.
After living at the Moorhead house for more than 60 years, Josie moved into Elim Rehab and Care Center in Fargo. As was the case wherever she went, Josephine was the life of the party; with her infectious sense of humor and distinctive laugh heard up and down the halls and into the rooms of her newest friends and neighbors at Elim.
After 96 years, that laugh has gone silent. It will be missed but not forgotten by the many her laughter, smile and friendship touched over the years.
Memorial Service: Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at 2:30 PM, in the Chapel of Elim Rehab and Care Center, Fargo.
