Joy R. Johnson, age 99, of Moorhead, Minnesota, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at Elim Rehab and Care Center in Fargo, ND.
Joy Ruby Johnson, the daughter of Thomas and Julia (Bakken) Johnson, was born June 29, 1907 in Sharon, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Sharon. She grew up and received her education at Sharon, where she graduated from high school. She attended teacher's college in Mayville, ND, and in Valley City, ND. She later received her bachelor's degree and master's degree from Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
Joy taught school for a total of 58 years. She taught in rural schools in North Dakota, and in Valley City, ND.
On July 18, 1944, Joy was united in marriage to Joseph J. Johnson, at Sharon. They lived in California following their marriage. In 1946, they moved to Hawley, MN, where Mrs. Johnson taught at Gunderson School and in Glyndon, MN. In 1953 the couple moved to Moorhead, MN, where Mrs. Johnson taught at Sharp School, until she retired in 1972. From 1973 to 1985, she was a substitute teacher in Moorhead.
Her husband, Joseph, died on January 17, 1973. Following his death Joy continued to live in Moorhead, including at Eventide Linden Tree Circle. In March of 2006, she became a resident of Elim Rehab and Care Center in Fargo.
Joy is survived by a sister, Ruth A. Olson of Aurora, Colorado, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a infant sister, and two brothers, Palmer and Tannes Johnson.
Visitation: Sunday, 3 PM to 6 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.
Funeral service: Monday, November 13, 2006, at 2 PM, in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead.
Burial: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead.
