Judith M. Nicholsen

July 7, 1942 — April 17, 2024

Moorhead, MN

Judith “Judy” M. Nicholsen, 81, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Judith Marie Fossum was born on July 7, 1942, to Oscar and Dagmar (Jordheim) Fossum, in Mohall, ND. Judy was raised in Mohall and graduated from Mohall High School in 1960. After high school she went to NDSU where she earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology.

On September 1, 1963, Judy married the love of her life, Gene R. Nicholsen, in Mohall. Together the two lived all over the country, including Anamosa, IA, Minneapolis, MN, Aberdeen, SD, Omaha, NE, Tyler, TX and finally to Moorhead. Moving around allowed them to make many new friends everywhere they went.  Together Judy and Gene raised three daughters, Kristine, Carrie, and Katherine.

Judy loved people, always enjoying spending time with friends and family. She was a big quilter and loved to play cards. Judy and Gene would often spend evenings square dancing together. Judy was a very musical person. In high school and college, she played the flute and piccolo.  After moving to Moorhead Judy joined the  church choir at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and played the hand bells as well.  Judy and Gene traveled a lot before Gene’s passing in 2016. They took many cruises going to Caribbean, Alaska, Canada, cross-Atlantic, Hawaii, Panama and even a 14-day cruise in South America around Cape Horn. After Gene’s passing Judy took two trips with Carrie and Kathy first a bus tour in Norway and then a bus tour starting in Austria, travelling through Germany and ending in Switzerland. Judy made connections everywhere she went and touched a lot of lives all over the world. She will be dearly missed.

Judy is survived by her daughters, Kristine Nicholsen, Carrie Nicholsen, and Katherine Nicholsen; sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Joe) Richardt and Beverly (Marlan) Helgeson; brother-in-law, Gregory (Kathy) Jorgenson; good friends, Nancy Campbell, Mary Swanson, and Diana Woodard; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; parents, Oscar and Dagmar; two infant children; grandson, Benjamin Thomas Nicholsen; and brother-in-laws, Leon Nicholsen and Joseph Nicholsen.
