Kathleen A. Borstad

d. December 20, 2010

Kathleen A. Borstad, 68, of Moorhead, MN, passed away December 20, 2010, at Sanford Palliative Care, Fargo, ND. She was the beloved first child of Arthur and Clara (Kortgaard) Borstad. She spent her childhood in Minot, ND, where she was born, and in Fargo, Moorhead, and Bozeman, MT. She attended Oak Grove High School and Concordia College, where she sang in the concert choirs. She married Norval Lee of Fargo, upon graduation from Concordia College in 1964.

Kathy was fascinated by the medical sciences and worked as a medical technologist for private practice doctors and at NDSU, where she was a lab specialist. Her curious mind then led her to a brief career in computer programming, including work at Steiger Tractor Co. in Fargo. She later earned a Masters degree in Speech Pathology from MSU and loved helping children to communicate.

Kathy is survived by her mother, Clara Borstad Wilkins; sisters, Karen Borstad and Marcia Smith; and stepfather, Jim Wilkins, all of Spokane, WA; nephew, Michael (Stephanie) Smith of Pasadena, CA; niece, Alyssa Smith of Ashland, OR; and aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur.

Kathy loved music. In addition to attending each and every Concordia Choir concert for several decades before and after college, she was an enthusiastic member of Fargo- Moorhead Opera, appearing in productions during the 1970's and 80's. She also sang with the Master Chorale and church choirs. She loved the family lake cabins and organized friend and family gatherings there.

Her greatest passion became the humane treatment of homeless animals. She rescued and found homes for countless stray dogs and cats while caring for the chronically ill ones herself. She was a kind and thoughtful friend to many people she met along her way. A special place in our hearts is reserved for cousin Joan, who was Kathy's guide, constantly by her side during her brief struggle with cancer.

SERVICES: at Kathy's request no formal services are scheduled. Memorials are preferred to animal rescue shelters and programs or Operation Smile.
