Kathryn Ann Olson, 80, of Fargo, ND, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016 in Eventide on Eighth, Moorhead, MN, surrounded by family, after a two-year battle with cancer, and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Kathryn Ann Mikkelsen, was born August 27, 1936 in Moorhead, MN, to Elmer and Hazel (Motchenbacher) Mikkelsen. She was raised on the family farm near Sabin, MN. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1954. Following high school, she continued her education at NDCSC, Wahpeton, ND, where she became a LPN.
Kathryn had a zest for adventure, and traveled west, where she utilized her skills, nursing at St. Patrick's Hospital, Missoula, MT, from 1961 to 1964. She travel west to Washington, where she worked at University Hospital, and worked as a typist for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, WA, from 1964 to 1968.
Kathryn returned to Minnesota, and worked in a hospital in Minneapolis from 1968 to 1973. In 1973, she returned to the Fargo/Moorhead area, where she worked in local medical facilities and for Minnesota Relay for the Deaf, in Moorhead.
Kathryn will most be remembered for her boisterous laugh, her positive outlook on life, her progressive thinking, her nurturing personality, along with her endless love of her daughter. She enjoyed fishing, biking, traveling and playing softball. She had an artistic gift for painting ceramics with her mother. For 25 years, she had the joy of sharing her work at arts and crafts shows.
Kathryn enjoyed spending time with her daughter and three grandsons. She would often be found playing Chinese checkers and enjoying a bowl of Cheetos together. She appreciated spending time with family and friends.
Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Sharla (Eric) Olson; grandsons, Evan, Maxwell, and Seth Olson; sisters, Jean Alternbernd, Janice (Tony) Thiel, Betty Gonsorowski, and Ann Gerdin; sister-in-law, Barbara Mikkelsen; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, William Mikkelsen.
A gathering of friends will be held on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, from 5 PM until 8 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Memorials preferred to Elmwood Cemetery, Sabin.
