Laura Jean Schrom, age 94, passed into heaven on April 13, 2019, at Serenity Assisted Living in Dilworth, MN.
Laura Jean Nielsen was born on March 17, 1925, in Baltic, SD, to Axel and Marguerite (Eaton) Nielsen. She grew up in Wolverton, MN, where her family owned the local creamery. Laura graduated from Wolverton High School in 1943 and became a Dakota Business School graduate in 1944. That began her accounting career working at Fargo Foundry, American State Bank, Town and Country Flower Shop, Silverline Boat Company, 3G's Ceramic, and Dakota Telco Credit Union.
Laura married Fred Schrom on October 18, 1947. They were together for almost 64 years until Fred's death in 2011. They resided in Moorhead, MN, and Laura was happily able to live in her house until she was age 93. Fred and Laura also enjoyed summers at their cabin on Lake Lida.
Laura was a multi-talented woman who was always being asked to figure out something and was always eager to help. She had many joys in her life, one of which was her favorite hobby-reading. Laura was excellent at cooking, baking, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She loved all kinds of art and painting. Ceramics, rosemaling, making Christmas decorations and making porcelain dolls were just some of her art activities. Her love of plants was attributed to her Danish heritage and proof of her green thumb was that she could get just about any plant to blossom.
She will be dearly missed by her family, especially around Christmas time as she knew how to celebrate Christmas well. Laura hosted this holiday at her house till she was 91 years old. Her family is so thankful for her and her faithfulness and all the self-sacrifices she made for them.
Laura is survived by her sister, Louise Kragness; her two daughters, Karen Lomsdal, Plymouth, MN, and Rebecca (Michael) Sherman, Fargo, ND; a son, Mark (Trish) Schrom, Moorhead; three grandchildren, Jes (Graham Simpson) Schrom, Jon-Michael (Rebekah) Sherman, and Angela (Austin) Schieler; and four great-grandchildren, Esmae, Selah, Ara, and Levon. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brother, Robert Nielsen.
Visitation for Laura will be Monday, April 22, 2019, from 5 PM until 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her funeral service will be Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 11 AM in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead. She will be buried in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
