Lavaughn "Vonnie" Cernik

Lavaughn "Vonnie" Cernik, 77, of West Fargo, ND, died on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, in Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo.

Lavaughn Del Nygard was born August 10, 1941, on a farm near Edinburg, ND, the daughter of Edwin and Alda (Steen) Nygard. She was raised there and graduated from Edinburg High School in 1959. After high school she moved to Grafton, ND.

On May 27, 1961, she was united in marriage to Eugene Cernik in Grafton. They made their home in Grafton where Vonnie worked at Wally's Supermarket and the State Developmental Center. In 1986, they moved to Las Vegas, NV, then to Fargo, ND, in 1989. While living in Fargo, Vonnie worked as a house cleaner for many years. Eugene died in 1999. For the last three years, she made her home in West Fargo until moving into Sheyenne Crossings Care Center in June.

She attended Bethel Evangelical Free Church of Fargo for many years.

Vonnie's greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and family. She was extremely musically talented learning how to play the piano, saxophone, guitar, accordion, and ukulele all by ear. She also enjoyed playing bingo.

She is survived by her children, Brenda (Jim Dusek) Cernik and David (Julie) Cernik, both of West Fargo; grandchildren, Bradley (Lindsey) Cernik, Paul Cernik, Ellen Cernik, and Tessa Cernik; brother, Orlyn (Sharon) Nygard, Edinburg; sisters, Sharon (Charles) Troftgruben, Fargo, and Nancy (Jim) Hassey, Clermont, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; sister and brother-in-law, Aldys and Paul Benjaminson; sisters-in-law, Joyce Nygard and Judy O'Toole; nephew, Greg Ferguson; and mother and father-in-law, Lloyd and Blanche Cernik.

A Gathering of Friends for Lavaughn will be Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 5 PM until 7 PM, with a 7 PM Prayer Service in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Grafton, ND.
