LaVerna Mjones

LaVerna Lois (Moore) Mjones, 94, Moorhead, MN, passed into eternity Thursday, February 29, 2024, in Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.

LaVerna was born to Mathew and Clara (Erickson) Moore on March 29, 1929, at Pelican Rapids, MN. LaVerna graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1947.

LaVerna enjoyed her growing up years in MN lakes country. While in high school, she spent her summer months working at Fair Hills Resort outside of Detroit Lakes, MN. After graduating from high school, she spent the next 27 years doing clerical work at St. Luke’s Hospital (now Lake Region Hospital) in Fergus Falls, Lincoln Mutual Insurance Company in Fargo, TNI/Neurological Associates in Fargo, and the Clay County Courthouse in Moorhead.

On June 28, 1952, she was united in marriage to Arnold Mjones at First English Lutheran Church (now First Lutheran Church) in Fergus Falls. Together, LaVerna and Arnold enjoyed their 4 children and 10 grandkids and had front row seats to all their dreams and accomplishments. They were married for 52 years with Arnold passing away in 2004. 

LaVerna had many hobbies. She loved gardening, sewing, cooking & baking and even had a Christmas cookbook published after she retired. She won various ribbons at the county fair for her cakes, pickles & relishes. LaVerna was also an accomplished cake decorator in the Fargo-Moorhead area for 25 years. Her beautiful cakes graced the tables of many brides and grooms, retirees, graduates, family celebrations, BUT the best cakes were made for her grandkid’s birthday parties! LaVerna was a participant in the Fargo 5k Marathon walking three miles at the age of 83 years old. She, along with four other ladies from her church, entered the marathon as a way to raise money for Running Waters; a non-profit organization associated with her church. 

LaVerna had Alzheimer’s but Alzheimer’s never had LaVerna. She was a Believer in Jesus Christ as her personal savior & trusted Him in all circumstances. 

LaVerna is survived by her four children, Roger (Lori) Mjones, Rick (Marilyn) Mjones, Linda (Dan) Kostich, and Sandy (Brian) Torgerson all in Moorhead; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; one sister, Leona Mattson in Pelican Rapids MN, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold; sister, Helen Jacobson; brother, James Moore; and her parents, Mathew and Clara Moore.

Visitation will begin at 1 PM, with her funeral at 2 PM, Monday, March 4, 2024, at Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, Moorhead.
