Lawrence Kunz, 82, of Moorhead, MN, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009, at the VA Medical Center, Fargo, surrounded by his family.
Lawrence Kunz was born September 5, 1927, in rural Heaton, ND, son of Charles and Anna (Osman) Kunz. He was the oldest of their eight children. He grew up and attended school in Sykeston, ND.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps (Air Force) on February 4, 1948. He had a distinguished career serving our country for 27 years, retiring at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, on October 31, 1973 at Hamilton Air Force Base, Novato, California. He was stationed in Canada, Washington, North Dakota, California, Florida, Alaska, South Carolina, and had a yearlong tour in Vietnam during his military career.
On May 20, 1951, Lawrence married Evelyn Joyce Johnson in Starkweather, ND, and they were married 58 wonderful years. They had two daughters, Deborah Ann and Lori Lee. Upon Lawrence's retirement, they returned to North Dakota to be near their aging parents. In 1974, they moved to Hawley, MN, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of building his own home. In 1990, they moved to Moorhead, MN.
Lawrence was a good and loving husband, parent, grandpa, great-grandpa, friend and neighbor. He enjoyed helping at his daughter's farm driving tractor, baling hay, and picking sweet corn. He was handy and always doing things around the house. He enjoyed attending auction sales, gardening, and feeding and watching the birds and squirrels in their back yard. He was always there to help his family, neighbors and friends. He took over most household duties and was primary caregiver for his wife for the past several years. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, Moorhead; daughters, Deborah (Jerry) Lubenow, Moorhead, and Lori (Keith) Aakre, Hawley; 5 grandchildren, Carl (Anna) Aakre, Perham, MN, Amanda (Keith) Thorp, Arvada, CO, Bryan Moore, Sarasota, FL, Monica (Travis) Hoyt,
Visitation: Thursday, 5 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.
Funeral: Friday, October 9, 2009, at 2 PM in Solem Lutheran Church, rural Hawley, MN.
