Leonard Oral Boone, affectionately known as Butch, was born on July 29, 1946, in Moorhead, MN, to Donald and Elsie (Wilson) Boone. He spent his formative years in Barnesville, MN, where he ran track and graduated from high school in 1964.
Shortly after graduation, Butch sought new opportunities in Crystal Lake, IL, where he began his career with Mathews Company, specializing in welding and the construction of grain bins. His heart found a home when, on August 15, 1964, he married his beloved Carolyn Roesch. The early years of their union were spent in Crystal Lake, but in 1970, they returned to Barnesville, where they purchased a charming farm on the edge of town—a place that saw the growth of both their family and their dreams.
Throughout his life, Butch's work ethic was unmatched. He dedicated himself to various roles, including a long-standing position with Holland Electric, while simultaneously tending to the farm. Butch expertly managed livestock, transitioning from raising farrowed pigs to cattle and dairy cows, all while balancing shifts at Gamble Robinson distribution center during the night. He was a true testament to hard work, embodying the spirit of perseverance every day. Butch also volunteered and served on the Barnesville Fire Department for some years.
Butch eventually found fulfillment in road construction, joining FM Asphalt and Border States, where he shared his talent until retirement. But his passion didn’t wane; he kept himself busy building hay feeders, crafting docks famously known as "Boone Docks," and welding digger rods.
In the moments away from work, Butch cherished fishing—an activity that brought him immense joy. Known for his adventurous spirit, he would embark on spontaneous one-day fishing trips to Canada. Many happy memories were created at the cabin they shared at Buchanan Lake or on escapades with their camper, exploring numerous lakes and enjoying the tranquil beauty of nature together.
Leonard "Butch" Boone's legacy is one of hard work, dedication, and the love he shared with his family. His memories will live on in the hearts of those he touched, as he leaves behind a rich tapestry of experiences and love that will never fade.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn Boone of Barnesville, MN, four sons: Kenneth Boone of Cormorant, MN, Kevin (Kris) Boone of Fargo, ND, Donald Boone of Crookston, MN, and Frank (Milissa) Boone of Barnesville, MN; seven grandchildren: Alex, Parker, Casey, Derek, Tim, Amanda, and Cory Boone; seven and a half great grandchildren; two sisters: MaryLou (Richard) Thompson of Baker, MN, and Wanda (Joseph) Bouret of Sheyenne, ND; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Elsie, and brother Ronald Boone.
