Loel was born on September 3, 1919, to Benjamin F. and Mabelle (Hansen) Frederickson in his mother's hometown of Saint Paul, MN. He was the oldest of three children.

Loel lived his childhood in Isle, MN, on the southeastern shore of Mille Lacs Lake, where his father was the town druggist and mayor. From an early age Loel was active in sports, which led him to play basketball at Gustavus Adolphus College for one year, and then on to play football for the University of Minnesota during their glory days before World War II. After graduating, he entered the US Army, serving in a Signal Service battalion in Sri Lanka, India, Burma, and China.

Returning home to Isle after the war, he met and married LaVonne Annette Westling on January 2, 1947. Later that year, their first child, Gail, was born. Other children were Mark, born in 1952, and Todd (Yahya), born in 1962.

Loel's teaching opportunities moved the family from Isle, MN, to Carthage, IL, Davenport, IA, Tomahawk Lake, WI, and finally in 1956, to Moorhead, MN, where he began as football coach at Moorhead State Teachers College (now MSU Moorhead). For 53 summers, Loel and his family retreated to their dear cabin on Wabedo Lake, near Longville, MN.
Loel was always an educator and coach. Over the years he taught history, social studies, health, and physical education, and he coached football, baseball, track, basketball, and wrestling, and taught swimming. Although recruiting trips, practices, and away games occupied a lot of time, coaching was his labor of love. After serving as chair of the Health-Physical Education-Recreation Department at MSU Moorhead, Loel retired in 1984. His administrative skills were put to good use again when he was elected president of the Wabedo-Little Boy Lakes Association. During retirement, Loel enjoyed travel, cabin time, football and baseball on TV, and he watercolor painting, a hobby at which he excelled. As a member of the F-M Watercolor Society, he exhibited his paintings at local venues and placed repeatedly in the annual Hawley Art Show.
Loel was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonne; his sister, Rosemary; his brother, Marcus; and his parents. Surviving are his three children, Gail, Mark, and Todd (Yahya); daughter-in-law, Fathia; and twin grandchildren, Ama and Abdu.
